🌟 Talking About Wishes and Regrets (Dilekler ve Pişmanlıklar)

Wish Yapıları

Yapı Kullanım Örnek
I wish + Past Simple Şimdiki zamana ait dilek (gerçek olmayan) I wish I knew how to speak Japanese. (Keşke Japonca bilseydim.)
I wish + Past Perfect Geçmişe ait pişmanlık I wish I had apologised sooner. (Keşke daha erken özür dileseydim.)
I wish + would Birinin davranışını değiştirmesini isteme (şikayet) I wish people wouldn’t talk with their mouths full. (Keşke insanlar ağzı doluykən konuşmasa.)

⚠️ Dikkat: “I wish I was/were” — formal İngilizce’de “were” tercih edilir: “I wish I were more polite.”

If Only (Keşke)

If only, “I wish” ile aynı yapıda kullanılır ama daha güçlü bir duygu ifade eder:

  • If only I + Past Simple: If only I were more patient. (Şimdiki zaman dileği)
  • If only I + Past Perfect: If only I had listened to my mother. (Geçmiş pişmanlık)

I regret to + V1 (farklı anlam!) I regret to inform you that… (Üzülerek bildiriyorum ki…)

⚠️ regret + -ing vs regret + to:
• I regret saying that. = O lafı söylediğim için pişmanım. (geçmiş pişmanlık)

Dear Ayşe,

I hope you’re doing well. I wanted to write to you about what happened at the party last Saturday.

I wish I had been more patient and understanding. I regret being so rude, and if only I could turn back time, I would handle the situation differently.

Please forgive me. Our friendship means a lot to me, and I promise to be more careful with my words in the future.

Write back soon.
Love,
Elif
